LIGHT & SHADOWS: PILLARS OF HEAVEN

During our travels to Jeju Island, we found ourselves drawn to the edge of the rugged coastline, captivated by a glimpse of the famous local diving ladies working out in the water. Driven by curiosity, we decided to make our way down the steep path to the shore to get a closer look at their traditional craft. What we discovered at the bottom, however, left us completely spellbound.

Stepping onto the shoreline felt like walking directly onto another planet. Up close, the terrain revealed itself as a massive, dramatic field of ancient, dried volcanic lava. The texture of the dark rock was so raw and perfectly preserved that it felt as if the liquid, rushing motion of the original eruption had been instantly frozen in time. You could physically see the ripples and folds of the earth where the molten rock once met the crashing ocean waves.

Standing in the middle of that vast, dark landscape, a sudden break in the heavy clouds changed everything. A single, monumental pillar of blinding natural light sliced through the sky, illuminating the stark silhouette of a lone figure standing against the timeless terrain. The contrast was breathtaking—a fleeting, heavenly beam of light casting its brilliance over centuries of frozen earth.

This intense visual drama is what inspired Pillars of Heaven. By transforming this photograph into a fine art piece, I wanted to capture that exact feeling of looking up at the sky in complete awe of the natural world.
