LIGHT & SHADOWS: GILDED PORTAL

During our travels, we had the opportunity to explore an incredible historic tunnel system. As our tour group descended into the dark underground passage, the reality of the tight space immediately set in for everyone. The tunnel ceilings were exceptionally low, forcing almost every single person in our group to bend over and painstakingly crawl their way forward.

For me, however, the experience was entirely different. Standing at just four feet and eight inches tall, my height became an unexpected gift in the dark. While the others struggled with the tight squeeze, I found myself duckwalking completely comfortably through the passage. I could practically roam around and explore quite freely, enjoying a unique vantage point that few others in the group could experience.

It was a striking contrast of perspectives. My fellow groupmates were fortunate enough to experience a small glimpse of the raw, physical reality that the soldiers and fighters went through back then, having to crawl through the earth to survive. Meanwhile, I felt incredibly fortunate in a different way. Because I could move with ease, I had the freedom to look around, pause, and comfortably gaze in awe at the sheer hard work and elaborate underground architecture surrounding us.

This memorable moment of light piercing through a dark historical tunnel is what inspired Gilded Portal. By transforming this photograph into a fine art piece, I wanted to capture the beauty found in hidden, challenging spaces. Whether displayed as a minimalist line-art canvas or assembled piece by piece as a highly textured jigsaw puzzle, I hope this stark interplay of warm light and heavy shadows brings a sense of resilience, historical wonder, and quiet strength into your home space.
