LIGHT & SHADOWS: ANCIENT SILENCE

When traveling, my partner and I share a quiet tradition: we intentionally seek out UNESCO World Heritage sites wherever we go. Sometimes our schedules align and we manage to reach them; other times, the logistics fall through. But on this day in August 2019, our journey led us successfully to the historic Seonjeongneung Royal Tombs in Seoul, South Korea.

Stepping onto the grounds, the sheer scale of the compound immediately shifts your perspective. Despite being nestled within a bustling, modern city, this sacred space commands an immediate, undeniable sense of silence and deep reverence. The outside world completely evaporates, replaced by centuries of history.

As we navigated the expansive grounds and finally reached the sacred burial mounds, I found myself looking through the framed opening of the dark gate structure. From that window, the mound felt simultaneously near and far, grand and deeply humble. The blinding mid-day sun beat down on the landscape outside, while the interior held onto its heavy, cool shadows. It was a visual manifestation of a boundary line between two worlds.

This stark interplay of dramatic light and deep shadow is what inspired Ancient Silence. By transforming this photograph into a fine art piece, I wanted to preserve that exact feeling of quiet awe. Whether displayed as a clean line-art canvas or assembled as a tactile, detailed jigsaw puzzle, I hope it brings that same sense of timeless reverence and calm into your home space.
